SF Urban Film Fest | Call for Submissions
OPEN CALL FOR VISUAL ART, BY AND FOR PILIPINX ARTISTS
SF Urban Film Fest is seeking submittals for the group visual arts exhibition "ECHO LOCATION"
Focusing on Pilipinx and/or Queer experience of South of Market
Submittals due Friday, 05/28/2021 here: http://bit.ly/EchoOpenCall
South of Market, like the Bay Area and California, has been the epicenter of contested territory since the Spanish first arrived in the Yerba Buena. The neighborhood has been remade time after time, through successive waves of induced migration, urban renewal, and displacement. Investments in technology, arts and culture have frequently positioned SoMa on the leading edge of the city, the region, and the country. Perched at the confluence of east and west, at the edge of both a continent and an ocean, the DNA of the SoMa is interlaced narratives of manifest destiny, imperialism, resilience, refuge, and rebirth.
Echo Location: The Cultural Geopolitics in the South of Market reflects on the neighborhood's complicated history, while celebrating current efforts by the historically dispossessed to reclaim and direct its future. The program focuses on two historically marginalized communities whose presence has and will continue to be essential to the heritage of SoMa: Filipinos and also LGBTQs.
Film programs will be presented with performances, panel discussions, and workshops over three weekends in August at Kapwa Gardens, the YBCA, and other venues. An exhibition of visual arts at YBCA - including photography, illustration, and videography - will anchor the programming. Film programming is a partnership between the SF Urban Film Fest and Filipino International Cine Festival.
