#FromTheArchives In 1970s San Francisco, the geographic proximity between the Fillmore's African-American cultural traditions and Japantown led to a fusing of artistic cultures. In its early years, KSW provided a platform for Asian-American jazz by hosting an annual festival. The early Asian-American jazz movement is inspired by kumidaiko (Japanese festival drumming), brought to America by Seiichi Tanaka and gagaku (Imperial court music), brought to America by Suenobu Togi.
